Crystal and Barrett at
Round Hill, Jamaica.
Some couples arrive at a session already completely at ease with each other. Crystal and Barrett are that kind of couple. We moved through the grounds of Round Hill together, from the limestone rock wall at the water's edge to the estate gardens, the pier, and the beach at last light. The photographs tell that story simply and without effort.
The rock wall
Limestone, vines, and the two of them.
Round Hill has a stretch of limestone wall where tropical vines hang low over the water. It is one of those locations that does not require much from a couple. The texture is rich, the shade is even, and the scale of the rock against two people creates a natural depth that works in almost every direction.
We started there. Crystal leaned back into Barrett with the cave mouth of the rock behind them. The laughter you see in the opener was real and it arrived fast.
The rock wall faces west and holds open shade through much of the afternoon. It is one of the reasons I return to this corner of the property as often as I do.
The estate stairs
Stone steps set into a hillside of green.
The pebble set stairs at Round Hill wind upward through the gardens. Palm fronds reach across from above, the white railings run alongside, and the canopy filters the light before it arrives at the steps. It is a gentle, intimate location that photographs well at this time of day.
Crystal and Barrett paused on the stairs and looked back. That is the image. Then they stayed on the steps and the garden gave them the rest of the frame.

The garden path
Walking through the grounds.
The garden paths at Round Hill run between dense tropical planting on either side. Trees arch overhead. The light filters through in layers. Walking shots in this space produce a quality of image that is hard to replicate anywhere else on the property.
Crystal and Barrett walked and talked. I stayed ahead of them. The frames from those few minutes are among the most natural of the whole session.
The pier
The sea behind them, everything quiet.
The pier extends into open Caribbean water. At this point in the afternoon the sky was beginning to soften. Barrett leaned against the stone post at the pier's edge with Crystal close in, and the calm sea behind them stretched all the way to the horizon.
The lawns
Open ground, palm trees, last of the afternoon light.
The lawns at Round Hill open out toward the water with tall palms behind. The light at this hour is warm and direct without being harsh. Crystal and Barrett stood together on the grass and the palms framed everything above them.
The sunset
The light that ends the day here.
The Jamaica sunset at Round Hill has a particular quality. The property faces west across open water and the mountains of the coastline sit low on the horizon. When the sun drops into that space the light on the water turns gold and the sky burns through orange into deep cloud.
Crystal and Barrett were on the beach as it happened. Two silhouettes, hands held, the last of the sun between them. Then we worked with flash as the sky went dramatic and they dipped into the last frame of the evening.

What to know about Round Hill.
Round Hill is one of the properties in Jamaica where I am a recommended photographer. There is no vendor fee and I have full familiarity with the grounds across different times of day and different seasons. That matters for a couples session because the sequencing of locations relative to the light is where most of the image quality is decided, well before the camera comes out.
If you are staying at Round Hill or anywhere else in Jamaica and want to plan a couples session, get in touch and we can talk through what your afternoon would look like.
