Photography at Half Moon
Resort Jamaica. What to expect.
By Michael Saab • Golden Light Photography Jamaica • Montego Bay
Half Moon Resort is the most consistently beautiful property I photograph at in Jamaica. I have worked there with families, couples, honeymooners, and proposal clients over many years, and the location produces exceptional results in almost every condition. The combination of private beach, estate grounds, villa settings, and extraordinary late-afternoon light makes it one of the best photography locations in the Caribbean.
This is what photography sessions at Half Moon actually look like, how to arrange one, and what to know before you arrive.
The property
Why Half Moon is one of the best
photography locations in Jamaica.
Half Moon sits on a long crescent of private beach east of Montego Bay. The estate is substantial, stretching along more than a mile of coastline with villa properties, tropical gardens, open grounds, and direct access to the sea. What makes it exceptional for photography is the variety of settings within a single location. A session at Half Moon can move from the private beach to a shaded garden path to an ocean-view terrace without leaving the property, which produces a gallery that feels varied and complete from a single visit.
The beach itself is long and relatively quiet compared to the busier resort strips further west. The water is calm and clear, the sand is pale, and the palm line along the shore is photogenic at almost every angle. In the late afternoon the light comes across the water from the west and produces a warm, directional glow that is some of the most flattering available anywhere on the north coast.
Half Moon does not charge an outside vendor fee for photographers staying at the property as guests. This is one of the practical reasons it is recommended so often for photography sessions in Montego Bay.
"Half Moon has everything a photography session needs in a single location. Beach, gardens, villas, and some of the best late-afternoon light on the north coast."
Locations within the property
The best spots within Half Moon
for photography sessions.
The main beach
The main crescent beach is the most used setting and consistently produces beautiful results. The length of the beach means there is almost always a stretch with no other guests visible, which makes the photographs feel private. The water entry points, the palm line, and the open sea views all work at golden hour.
The villa grounds
For guests staying in the villa section of the property, the villa grounds offer something more intimate. Private pool terraces, garden paths, and ocean-view settings that feel completely different from the open beach. Family sessions and couples sessions in the villas often produce some of the most personal images from a Half Moon stay.
The gardens and estate paths
The tropical garden paths and estate grounds within the property add variety to a session without moving far. Shaded, green settings contrast well with the open beach and work particularly well for families with young children who need somewhere cooler and more contained.
The waterfront and dock area
The waterfront structures and dock areas within the estate offer a more graphic, structural backdrop. This setting works well for couples who want something with a different visual quality from the natural beach and garden settings.
Who photographs here
Families, couples, honeymoons,
and proposals at Half Moon.
Half Moon is one of the most popular locations for family photography in Montego Bay. The beach is accessible for young children, the grounds have space to move, and the estate is quiet enough that a family session can unfold at its own pace without feeling crowded or rushed. Multigenerational families and larger groups work well here.
For honeymoon and couples photography at Half Moon, the late afternoon golden hour session on the main beach is one of the most requested in Jamaica. The light at this time, combined with the scale and privacy of the estate, produces images that are difficult to achieve at busier, more compact resort properties.
Half Moon is also one of the best locations for surprise proposal photography in Montego Bay. The length of the beach provides enough space to position discreetly. The estate grounds give access to multiple spots for the proposal itself. And the light in the late afternoon is exceptional for capturing the moment as it unfolds.
Timing
Best time for photography
at Half Moon Resort.
The late afternoon golden hour is the best window for photography at Half Moon. The light comes across the water from the west and the warmth and direction it produces on the beach is the property at its most photogenic. Sessions typically start between 4:30pm and 5:30pm depending on the time of year, and run through until just after sunset.
Morning sessions are also available and work well for families with young children. The beach is at its quietest in the early hours and the soft early light produces a cooler, more serene quality. For families with toddlers or very young children, a 7am start is often more productive than a late-afternoon session.
